afk t-shirt drive
Just a follow up message regarding the afk Cafe T-shirt drive....
As indicated by the event ... you can buy as many shirts as you want (please include multiple orders if the shirts have different specs) and you also have the option of including your username/handle on the back of the shirt. They come in black or white ... and there will be male and female style shirts to choose from.
Ladies tees go up to size 18, and mens go up to a size 4XL.
They should cost ~$20 each.
Please either reply to this message through facebook or email me at Alisa.Taylor@gmail.com with your order and direct any questions, queries or concerns in the same way.
The following are the details you need to provide:
Future owner of the shirt(s) name:
Contact details for them (if not through facebook):
Total # shirts for this person:
The sooner you respond the sooner we can finalise payment and order the shirts :) If you know of anyone who wants to purchase a shirt but who doesnt seem to have been contacted ... please pass on my details as this will probably be a once off order. (As mentioned previously .. for those not currently located in Brisbane shipping needs can be negotiated)
Look forward to hearing from you soon :D

Sad news indeed.
It is my sad duty to inform you that, as of 3pm today, afk cafe is closed for good. For those of you who had organised events here (especially the Blood Bowl League and the Board Game group) or just like to hang out here, we're very sorry. It was a combination of financial and workload pressure that forced this closure, and while it may seem sudden it has been an option for a while. It is not a decision that has been made lightly.
All those involved with the running of afk wish to extend a very grateful thankyou to everyone who has offered their help and support while we've been open. Special thanks are due to our members and regulars, without whom we could not have made it this far.
The money we have raised for Child's Play will still go towards gaming equipment for the Mater Children's Hospital, and we will let you know the results of that effort when it's wrapped up.
We will be keeping the Livejournal community and Facebook group open for the next week or two for those who want to comment on or discuss the closure.

movie night - cartoons!!
The first movie night of 2008 is here!
It will commence at 7pm on January 12th and this months theme is cartoons.
The line up is as follows:
Beauty and the Beast (G)
Toy Story (G)
The Incredibles (PG)
Titan AE (PG)
The cost is the usual $10 per person, with all proceeds being donated to Child's Play.
Bring your friends (the max PG rating mean you can bring just about anyone), rock up for dinner, get in early to reserve a couch (or bribe the staff with extra donations to have one reserved for you) and get ready for a fantastic night of 'attemping' to stop people reciting the movies and singing along to the songs ;)

afk cafe will be closed all day this Saturday, December 15th, for a private function.
And yes, this is why the movie night is on a Friday instead of a Saturday night.

Movie night at afk cafe, Woolloongabba
The last movie night of the year is approaching! At 7pm on December 14th, we're breaking out the musical episodes from TV series. Lexx, Buffy, Scrubs, The Simpsons, Daria and Clone High are on the menu so far. If you have another you'd like us to show, comment here or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org (we're still looking for some of the Simpsons episodes.)
We're also looking for a copy of the Gilligan's Island musical 'The Producer.'
The cost is $10 per person, with all proceeds being donated to Child's Play. This is your last chance to donate through us for this Christmas, but you can use the Paypal link on their website (www.childsplaycharity.org) to donate to the Mater Children's Hospital, or any of the other hospitals they support.
Get in early to reserve a couch, or bribe the staff with extra donations to have one reserved for you.

Thanks to everyone who donated money to Child's Play
at the movie night. If you forgot to donate on the night, or couldn't make it but would still like to contribute, you can hand your donations to us or go through the Paypal link on the Child's Play website.
We're trying to ascertain the level of interest in a New Year's event at afk. If you could reply to this poll, and ask anyone else you know on LJ who hasn't yet joined this group, that'd be awesome.
What are you doing on New Year's Eve?
I have plans already.
I'm not sure yet.
Whatever looks like fun on the night.
What are you doing on New Year's Day?
Recovering at home.
I'll still be partying!
Going out for a greasy hangover breakfast

Well, it looks like afk will soon be a one-stop-shop for all your geekery needs. We've now set up a Games Workshop paint rack and some Magic: The Gathering card displays. We've also got Dungeons and Dragons books (V3.5, and they're selling out fast), and you can place Shadowfist and Warhammer orders with us.
If there's something else you're interested in, ask about it. We may be able to order it in for you.

Level 1 Philanthropist
Win! We raised $230 at last Saturday's movie night. Many large thanks to those who came along and donated.
The selection of movies was a success in general. If you disagree, tell us what we should screen at the next one. Any and all feedback is welcome - there's a discussion going on at the Facebook group
about what the theme and movies should be at the next one. Or you can be like the cool kids, and comment here. If you have an idea for something cool, and you think we'd be a good venue, let us know.
Don't forget to book for the All-Nighter! (6pm 29/9 to 8am 30/9)
Oh, and also, yarrr!

Up and coming event-type things:Saturday September 15th: Movie Night!
Starting at around 7pm, this movie night is in aid of a charity named Child's Play
. Founded by the authors of Penny Arcade
, this organisation raises money to donate video game platforms and games to children's hospitals. Price: $10 donation (includes popcorn and a drink.)
-We at afk will be covering the cost of the popcorn and drink, so every cent of your donation goes directly to the charity. Mater Children's Hospital (which is just up the road from the cafe itself) was the first Australian hospital to benefit from this charity, so dig deep.
-The Princess Bride
-The Big Lebowski
We anticipate this thing lasting until about 1 in the morning, so don't plan anything for early the next day. The order of the movies is not set in stone.6pm Saturday September 29th - 8am Sunday September 30th: All-Nighter!
It's another all-nighter! Bring your pillows and blankets, and come along early to reserve yourself a couch.Price: This one costs $20 for members and $25 for non-members, which provides you with all-night intarwebs access. Book early to go in the draw for a crappy MP3 player!
For $20 more you can get the meal deal, which constitutes one main and one drink for dinner, and one meal and one drink for breakfast. The kitchen closes at 10pm, after which time you'll be stuck with whatever Jason can produce.
